1,000,000,000 Mobile Handsets Shipped in 2006

bar_logos.jpgIf there was any doubt as to whether the handset market could continue its torrid growth trend, recent data clearly shows this gravy train is still rolling along with nary any sign of slowing down.
Global mobile phone shipments grew 25% in 2006 with just over a billion units sold, a new industry record. Nokia is still firmly entrenched as the world's most popular manufacturer with a weighty 34% global market share. Motorola continues to do terrific volume, and Sony Ericsson is clearly the company on the move as it has its eyes on catching Samsung for 3rd place. If Sony is able to continue its revival of the Walkman brand, they could realistically topple Samsung in 2-3 years. Apple won't likely kick up more than a speck of dust in terms of overall marketshare for the forseeable future, but Apple's entrance will be a catalyst for more innovation, which will only serve to stoke market appetite going forward. Bottom line: it's still boom times for the mobile manufacturing industry.

"Mobile phone sales have exploded from less than 100,000 units in 1983 to 100 million units in 1997 and have now passed the 1-billion level in 2006. During that time, mobile phones have become a critical driver of innovation and profit for the world's semiconductor, memory, battery and display industries."
