An iPhone 3G FAQ

Similar to what it did before, CW has prepared an article to answer your FAQs about the upcoming iPhone 3G. If you're wondering what 3G, activation, unlocking, data plans, AT&T (standing in for Rogers, in this case) will all have to do with the second version of Apple's mobile, this report is for you.

I liked the online activation. Why the change? No one's saying, but analysts have been quick to connect the dots between online activation and unlocking.

By requiring in-person activation -- which is, remember, the way most phones are sold -- AT&T locks the customer into a two-year contract before he or she exits the store. There's no longer a way to buy an iPhone, then hack it -- "unlock" it in the parlance -- and then use it on another carrier's network.

Although it's definitely interesting reading, take note that a lot of it is based on the U.S. iPhone experience, so there's a possibility that some changes will be made when we get the device locally. Just how subtle those changes will be remains to be seen.
