Android Contest Draws Over 1,000 Participants

Google made heads turn and raised a few eyebrows with the announcement of the Android. While it had a rough start, it was able to work out the issues raised by the early testers and extended the deadline of the development contest. If you ever wondered just how many participants signed up, the answer to that is 1,788. That's equal to 1,788 applications for the Android. Of course, that doesn't mean they're unique programs because duplicates are sure to exist, but regardless of how many of them overlap each other's functions, it's still an impressive number.

The challenge entries cover many different application areas, including games, social networking, utilities, productivity and developer tools, according to a Google blog entry submitted by Azhar Hashem, product marketing manager for Android.

The U.S. generated the largest number of entries, with other entries coming from Germany, Japan, China, India, Canada, France and the U.K., Hashem wrote.

50 semi-finalists will be revealed next month. They will receive $25,000 each to help further development. 20 winners will be announced, 10 of which will receive $100,000 while another 10 will get $275,000.
