Android Is Now Open Source

Google is saying forget SDKs and other restrictive means of protecting software. Its mobile platform Android is going open source!

...today, we're making what might just be the most exciting announcement of all: we and our Open Handset Alliance partners have now released the source code for Android. There's a huge amount of code and content there, so head over to http://source.android.com/ for all the details.

Check out the video if you want an introduction. Android has been criticized for being too open in the past. Because each mobile is going to sport a different variation of Android, the experience can leave users disjointed. By going open source, the platform is even more exposed. Well, the kill switch should keep things in check, in case they get out of hand.
