Android Predicted To Take 4% Market Share

There's no doubt in anybody's mind that Android is going to make its mark in history. Initially, of course, it's going to create a wave of hype where everyone's going to at least try to get their hands on an Android-powered mobile. Then the reviews and comparisons with existing platforms will come in and, give or take a week or two later, we'll know whether Google did good or bad. But it isn't going to matter because whether it succeeds or not, the new operating system will be remembered. The question is what kind of memory it will leave in people's minds.

For starters, analysts are predicting that Android is going to receive 4% share of the market in the fourth quarter of this year.

Neil Mawston, Director, Wireless Device Strategies at Strategy Analytics, said, “We forecast 10.5 million smartphones to be sold in the United States during Q4 2008. We estimate smartphones with Google’s Android operating system, led by HTC of Taiwan, will reach 0.4 million units in the quarter, for a 4 percent marketshare.

While it isn't a significant chunk, it will still create a foundation upon which Google can build on. We'll see whether the predictions are correct or not soon enough.
