Android vs LiMo

limo2.jpg

For those of you keeping a close eye on the mobile open source development scene, here's a comparison between the Android and the LiMo. If you're wondering what the latter is, you can check our previous coverage to find out. The impatient ones can jump straight ahead to the comparison, which is below:

So who will win?

That's a hard question to answer, as they both offer a totally different solution. Google offers a complete solution, which can be remolded from the top down. LiMo's solution provides a foundation, on which developers can build the user experience from the ground up.

In terms of adoption, I'm willing to bet Android will reign victorious in the end. The crowds are already buzzing about it, and a number of developers are already cracking out code for it.

The Android hype machine has a lot to do with the prediction. Considering that we're essentially talking about a platform here and not an actual cellphone unit, the amount of buzz it's able to generate is significant. With Google's name attached to it, the Android certainly has a commanding lead in this competition, but is it a fair one? After all, LiMo is only offering a foundation, something that developers can use to jump off from, while Android is covering all bases.
