Android's App Numbers

androidlogo1-thumb.png

Google has revealed its earnings for the last quarter of 2008 and although the numbers are decent, they also revealed the gap between its app store and Apple's. Right now, Google says that 800 apps are available for Android. How many are there for the iPhone? Above 15,000.

Of course, Apple did get a huge head start in the game, so it's not exactly fair. The iPhone continues to be popular, making it a very attractive platform in the eyes of developers. There's also the advantage of singularity: an app that works on one iPhone will work on any other. That's something of a question for Android right now.

Expect to see things pick up for Android as more phones and developers support it. Compared to the iPhone, the Google mobile OS is still in its infancy, so it's too early to write it out of the picture. Still, 15,000 is a tough number to catch. Will Android have as many apps a year from now? It's going to need a couple of success stories before it can do that. We'll just have to wait and see.
