Appe Store Nears 10,000 Apps

appstore_hero20080811.png

The Apple App Store has reached gargantuan numbers in terms of offerings. There are now close to 10,000 programs to choose from, making choices even tougher than before. What's available covers everything you can imagine (and probably what you can't), making both the iPhone and the iPod Touch very versatile devices.

The appeal of the App Store affects both consumers and developers. For the former, there's the dirt-cheap pricing. Nearly 75% of the available applications cost two US dollars or less. The remaining quarter can range from ten to a hundred USD. For developers, the chance to become the next big thing is certainly tempting. The App Store has had its share of success stories for software writers, so it's understandable that others are vying for their slice of the pie.

It's not all good news, of course. Right now, there's a concern regarding the quality of the applications. With nearly 10,000 available programs, there's bound to be a couple of misses here and there. We've already reported about a few that somehow got through Apple's screening process, so while those aren't indicators of bad quality, mistakes are certainly beginning to rear their ugly heads.
