Apple In No Hurry To Get Flash For iPhone

iphone.jpg

In the wake of news that Microsoft is making Silverlight available to Windows Mobile-powered devices, Apple is saying that it is in no rush to enable Adobe Flash for the iPhone. While Apple recognizes the importance of Flash for mobile phones and PDAs, it does not see the urgency in supporting it. After all, it already has a good relationship with YouTube.

"There's no doubt that Flash is important for mobile and will become even more important," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at JupiterResearch LLC and a Computerworld columnist. "But for Apple, it's not as urgent [for it to support Flash] as Microsoft.

"People want Flash primarily to get videos on YouTube, and Apple already has a tight relationship with YouTube. So there's less pressure for it to react," he added.

Steve Jobs commented two weeks ago that they are not in a hurry to enable Flash support for the iPhone, saying that "proper Flash" is too slow on their touchscreen mobile. He doesn't want to work with Flash Lite either.

The recently-released iPhone SDK will give Adobe the opportunity to work with putting Flash on the iPhone, but don't look forward to that happening anytime soon as well. According to the source article, Adobe has yet to review the SDK, much less start working on it. At present, there is no pressure on both companies to enable Flash for the iPhone. Either there's little to no demand for it or users are really content with just having YouTube available on their mobiles.
