Apple To Get Rid of DRM?

128px-Apple-logo.png

For those of you who download music off iTunes, there are rumors going around that Apple is said to have made agreements to remove DRM from the music available on its online store. Furthermore, it might become possible to download music directly to iPhones.

The downside is that Apple might give in to demands from Sony, Universal and Warner to change its pricing. The 99-cent cost isn't unlikely to become a thing of the past, but don't expect it to be the only price on iTunes. If the report is true, popular tracks may cross that barrier. "Back catalog" songs will hit 79 cents, so it's not all bad.

On making the switch to a variable pricing model, any new additions to iTunes' music roster would immediately be made available without the digital rights management) DRM that prevents easy copying, while existing titles would gradually see their locks removed.

Expect more details to emerge tomorrow at Macworld. Considering that iTunes is the dominant online music store, any change in the way it conducts business, from pricing to DRM, is going to affect the online music scene as a whole.
