BlackBerry Not Going Open Source

rimlogo.gif

With all the buzz about Android going open source and Apple releasing iPhone SDKs, you'd think that other companies would naturally follow suit. If you were hoping for a chance to play around with the BlackBerry OS, prepare to get your hopes crushed, because RIM isn't interested at the moment.

A question posed at a recent RIM developer conference suggested that at least some BlackBerry devs would like a crack at Waterloo's inner workings -- but these guys probably shouldn't be holding their breath. The answer from on high was that RIM has an open-source "team" that's looking into releasing the code for some of its development tools, but as for the platform itself, "that's a pretty big leap."

It's understandable to see why RIM would not want to go open source. After all, it has proven that it can succeed by keeping everything in-house, so why reinvent the wheel, right? Still, with both Apple and Google having their own app stores with products from third parties, you can bet that RIM isn't going to take that sitting down.
