Chargers: One Size Fits All

BXP54116.jpg

How often do you find yourself looking for a charger for your mobile? Draining your cellphone's battery seems to happen at the most unfortunate moments, like when you're in the office and your charger's at home, or when there's an emergency and you're low on power. To make things worse, an extra charger is almost never around, because your co-workers didn't bring theirs or what they have is incompatible with your model. In my case, the norm here is Nokia, so there are plenty of chargers around if you happen to be fond of Finnish mobiles. But what if you're using Sony Ericsson? Or Motorola?

The good news is that an industry group is seeking to come up with a universal charger to help ease the pain.

A trade group supported by most of the big industry players has announced plans for a single standard phone charger cable which would work on all handsets, regardless of brand.

The OMTP's paper recommends that the micro USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard is used across mobile devices. USB is the de facto standard for the PC industry and it is a technology understood by consumers. Reaching mobile industry agreement on USB will help streamline the whole value chain and provide end users with a larger choice of the most popular peripherals.

It's still in the early stages so we'll have to wait a while before we get more solid information. Still, it's a start. Hopefully the pain of recharging will become easier to bear.
