Dell Prototype Mobiles Fail To Stir Interest

dell.gif

Dell's attempt to enter the cellphone market has been hit with a setback and it's not because of the usual reasons like bugs in the programming, hardware malfunctions and the like. It's delayed because there's carriers have shown "a lack of interest" in the product. Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu had this to say about Dell's prototype mobiles:

"From our conversations with supply chain and industry sources, it appears that it ultimately came down to lack of carrier interest," Wu wrote.

Potential subsidies from cellular carriers were small, making the devices that Dell made a tough sell. One of the specific problems implied is the lack of anything distinct in the prototypes, making them fail to stand out in the already-crowded mobile arena. Dell is said to have gone "back to the drawing board" to come up with a more distinguished design.
