Gmail Enables Chat To SMS Text Messaging

send_SMS.png

Google is making serious strides in keeping you in touch with your friends. It recently implemented chat to SMS text messaging for Gmail, enabling users to send messages to cellphones straight out of their email.

Now you can keep the conversations going with a new Labs feature that lets you send SMS text messages right from Gmail. It combines the best parts of IM and texting: you chat from the comfort of your computer, and your friends can peck out replies on their little keyboards.

It's pretty straightforward to set up. While logged in, go to Settings then Labs. Enable "Text Messaging (SMS) In Chat", Save and you're all set. While computer to cellphone SMS messaging isn't exactly groundbreaking news, seeing Google implement it in Gmail is still a pretty good thing. What's even better is that it doesn't need you to install an application. A browser and a Gmail account is all you'll need. Of course, having friends to actually send messages to is a different thing. That's a requirement that even Google can't provide.
