God Games Go Mobile With Pocket God

Pocket God Review from Ars Technica on Vimeo.

Black & White and Dungeon Keeper are fine god games, but like any other PC title, you can't take it with you. If playing as a celestial being is your thing, Pocket God for the iPhone can provide the thrills of dealing divine punishment on your subjects.

In the game, you can create island natives and then come up with creative ways to plot their demise. Sharks, lightning bolts, volcanoes, coconuts and all sorts of mischief and mayhem are at your disposal. Now, you'd think that for a game that just deals with putting animated islanders through pain, you'd get to the point where you'll run out of methods of unleashing your wrath. That's not going to happen, not if the game's community has anything to say about it.

Pocket God isn't so much an App Store product as it is an iPhone cultural phenomenon. Makers Bolt Creative have been pushing out an update (or "episode") about once a week. Every seven days or so, you can download the updated version and see what new options Bolt Creative has added to the island.

Vampirism was recently added, with A Mighty Wind to follow. For a dollar, the fun isn't too bad. If you're thinking about trying it out, now would be a good time. You wouldn't want to join in too late, when everyone else has done so and then moved on.
