Google Blocks App Downloads For Unlocked G1 Phones

There's a minor ruckus going on between Google and owners of the unlocked version of the Android G1 phone. It seems that Google has enforced a policy that prevents them from downloading new paid apps from the Android Market.

Last week, Google employees began replying to questions posted on the Android Market Help Web site about being unable to see copy protected applications in the store. "If you're using an unlocked, developer phone, you'll be unable to view any copy-protected application," wrote Google employee Ash on the help site in reply to a user's question on Friday. "This is a change that was made recently."

Google isn't offering a lot of details regarding the policy change, but the source says that it could be a move to clamp down on an oversight that was said to allow unlocked phones to download paid apps for free. There are other theories as well, but it all boils down to the fact that these developer phones have more flexibility than standard units.
