Google Lines Up Android Enhancements

androidlogo1-thumb.png

Anyone who keeps tabs on cellphone news has seen, read and heard about Android by now. It's time to get reacquainted with it as Google announces upcoming features for the mobile platform.

Among the new things will be the option to save MMS attachments. The browser receives two enhancements: cutting and pasting and support for the new SquirrelFish JavaScript engine. The latter is going to open a lot of opportunities for developers, so that's something worth keeping an eye on. Downloads are also getting overhauled. Users can now pause and resume them whenever they want to.

Other improvements include the camera, which will be able to capture video in addition to its usual functions. Virtual keyboards, a new API for speech recognition and Bluetooth support round up the list.

With all these enhancements lined up for Android, one can't help but ask when a local version will come out. If I remember correctly, the iPhone was already on the 3G version by the time it got here. Will it take that long for Android as well?
