Google On What Drives Android

logo_android.gif

A recent interview with Andy Rubin, the man behind Google's Android reveals why the search engine giant is investing so much in the fledgling operating system:

Google says they are driving the Android initiative because they want to see internet-style development on mobile platforms in the way that the openness of the web has given rise to Facebook and the Web 2.0 movement which should be able to migrate to the mobile phone.

Of course, coming in at the ground level of Android will give Google plenty of opportunity to tailor its own applications.

Right now it's all about open source and the potential it can bring to the mobile environment. Since no one owns the code, anyone can contribute freely, bringing their experience into the field. New applications can be created and existing ones can be improved, as long as developers are willing to work on it. This is the sort of openness and interaction that Google hopes to bring with the Android, and with the first batch of Android-powered mobiles coming this year, we'll finally be able to see how it will fare against Windows Mobile, Symbian and, of course, the iPhone.
