Google Unveils New Engine For Mobile Gmail

Thumbnail image for Google-iPhone-5.png

Google's second announcement is about an update to Gmail. Those of you who have been accessing it using your phones may have noticed a performance upgrade lately because it's using a new engine. Overall usage of mobile Gmail should be faster. Google even says that you should be able to do email over a poor or non-existent connection. Is that the same as the offline feature in the web-based version? Here's the lowdown:

All this is achieved with aggressive caching and by leveraging new browser technologies, like HTML5 and Gears. The full impact of this new architecture isn't visible yet, but it will enable us to significantly improve performance and quickly roll out new features in the near future.

Improvements were done to the UI as well. Instead of having to scroll through your inbox to either open a message or do multiple selections, a bar will now appear as you navigate, allowing you access to mail options regardless of where you are. Unfortunately, the new updates are only available for Android, the iPhone and iPod Touch. Support for other platforms is expected though.
