Industry Minister Expects Better Things For The Mobile Market

Jim Prentice, Canada's Industry Minister, said that he expects "greater competition and lower prices" for the mobile business in a year. This is said to come as a result of the wireless spectrum auction that was conducted a couple of weeks ago.

"...It will be approximately a year before we see new competition..." Prentice said at a news conference in Edmonton.

He said there is already "significant pressure" on prices and in anticipation of more competition "certainly I think there will be downward pressure on prices."

Watch out for the names of Globalive Wireless and Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Wireless. Both were among those who participated in the auction, along with the current big three: Rogers, Bell and Telus.

Better options, lower prices and more competition are the things that I was hoping for when I reported the auction in an earlier post. It might take a while before we start seeing the new arrivals in action, but at least we'll have something to look forward to.
