The mobile phone finally meets its maker.
Leading up to Macworld many wondered a) if Apple would finally reveal the long-rumoured Apple iPhone, and b) whether Apple could really innovate in a hardware space that was already very crowded. Answer: a resounding YES on both accounts!
Much like the Super Bowl or any big movie event, it's pretty hard to live up to mass hype and pent-up hysteria, and more often than not we're left disappointed in these circumstances. Therefore, you really have to give Apple and Steve Jobs all the credit in the world for not just living up to the hype and the expectations, but subsequently blowing pretty much everybody away in the process, even those journalistas who cover this stuff for a living. The launch of the Apple iPhone may go down as the single, greatest launch in Apple history, even more so than the iPod or iMac. Steve Jobs stepped up to the plate and smacked the equivalent of a technological home run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Sorry to be so dramatic, but the truth is, it's warranted. The Apple iPhone is 'that' special and that far ahead of its time.
Go ahead and drool with the rest of us...
- 11.6 millimeters thin (the Motorola Q is 11.5mm)
- 3.5 inch revolutionary multi-touch screen and interface (no stylus, no buttons!)
- Sensors galore - this device is laced with so many sensors, you'd think it had a pulse
- 2 megapixel camera
- 4GB or 8GB of storage
- Bluetooth
- WiFi
- Runs on OS X!!!! Which means Widgets, Google Maps, Safari Web Browser, iTunes
This phone may be 5 years ahead of its time, but will go on sale in the U.S.A. sometime in June 2007. Europe to follow in 4Q 2007, and Asia in 2008. Of course, no word on when our little country Canada will be graced with this mobile bon-bon.
Some parting shots...

Here's a video that previews/demos what's possible using a multi-touch interface.
