iPhone 2.0: Implications & Expectations

The announcement of the iPhone SDK, along with the public beta of iPhone support for Microsoft Exchange, the dominant email software for enterprise networks, are deviations from Apple's usual practices. This means that it's venturing into new territory. For companies as big as Apple, opening up the iPhone to a beta test and third-party development presents a substantial risk. Dubbed by Steve Jobs as the iPhone 2.0, CW has an informative article detailing the changes and the implications.

The first, Exchange support, is a big deal, but it appeals to a subset of iPhone owners. With Apple's emphasis on the consumer market -- and its less-than-stellar reputation among old-school enterprise IT -- not every iPhone customer will care whether the device can grab e-mail from a server at headquarters.

The second, however, will affect everyone who has or plans to buy an iPhone, because everyone buys software or downloads free software.

If you're an iPhone owner, or are looking into buying one, it's a good article. You can read the rest via the source link.
