iPhone Dominates, No One Is Surprised

We know the iPhone's popular, but just how popular is it? Canalys has the figures while Roughly Drafted has the analysis:

In its first full quarter of sales, the iPhone has already climbed past Microsoft’s entire lineup of Windows Mobile smartphones in North America, according to figures compiled by Canalys and published by Symbian. That puts the iPhone ahead of smartphones running Symbian, Linux, and the Palm OS, but behind the first place RIM BlackBerry. The figures mesh with retail sales data already reported by NPD, which similarly described the size of the US market with a 27% chunk bit out by Apple’s iPhone.

That's a pretty hefty chunk of the market right there. The security concerns and relative lack of features have done nothing to stop the iPhone from dominating the U.S. market. The chart also compares Apple's performance against Microsoft's Windows Mobile, but it's only fair to a degree. After all, WM is only an operating system while the iPhone is a hardware-software package. Will this prompt Microsoft to push for a Zune phone or will it do the exact opposite?
