iPhone Jailbreaking & Unlocking 101

iphone.jpg

Ars Technica has a little writeup about everything you need to know about unlocking and jailbreaking an iPhone. What's the difference? Can you really use the two words interchangeably and come up with the same meaning? Both questions are answered and more, so even if you're only slightly curious, it's still a worthwhile read.

"Jailbreaking" opens the entire iPhone file system for use. Once jailbroken, you can read and write to system files as well as media files. You'll be able to use SFTP, AFP, and other standard file access protocols to read and write data. For example, you can use a client like Cyberduck to move data onto and off from the iPhone.

For those of you who feel like taking a chance, the article also links to procedures on how to do the jailbreak yourself. Overall, it's a very informative read. It's a little late (or long overdue, depending on how you think about it), but at least it's there now.
