iPhone Remote Deactivation Confirmed

A few days ago I posted about Apple's ability to deactivate iPhone applications remotely. Back then, it was a rumor. There was strong evidence suggesting that it could be true, but it was only a rumor nonetheless. Steve Jobs changed that today by confirming that a kill switch does exist, explaining that it was a security measure.

Steve also confirmed the controversial iPhone application kill switch in the event that Apple inadvertently approves a malicious program for distribution. Jobs said, "hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull."

The report also says that 60 million programs have been downloaded since the iPhone's launch last month. With those numbers, it's understandable why Apple would want to have some method of control over the software running on its precious mobile. The question is whether people will appreciate the extra security or prefer that Apple mind its own business.
