LiMo Platform Announces First Release

Another mobile platform made its first release today. LiMo Foundation, a group of prominent names in the mobile industry, announced the availability of the LiMo Platform Release 1. What's notable about it is that it's the world's first "globally competitive, Linux-based software platform for mobile devices."

The LiMo Platform -- leveraging standards and open-source projects -- is a modular, plug-in, hardware-independent architecture built around an open operating system, with a secure run-time environment for support of downloaded applications.

Third-party developers can use LiMo's application programming interface (API) specifications -- available now at www.limofoundation.org -- to build new applications that deliver next-generation consumer experiences across a tremendous, stable base of globally deployed mobile devices. Middleware components for the LiMo Platform can be implemented in either C or C++ programming languages.

Software Development Kits will become available later this year to facilitate further development. With Google, AOL, Apple and now LiMo out with their own platforms, it's proving to be quite a strong start for the software side of the mobile industry. Does that mean we can look forward to great applications for our phones? Hopefully, but we'll keep you posted.
