Microsoft Has No Plans To Make A Cellphone. Yet.

Speculations surrounding Microsoft's Zune-phone were recently put to rest by CEO Steve Ballmer, who said that the tech giant has no plans to make a cellphone. For now, at least.

"I don't actually think it will make sense for us to make a cellphone," Ballmer said, speaking at The Wall Street Journal's "D: All Things Digital" conference in Carlsbad, Calif., Wednesday.

Though he conceded that he once said the same thing about creating a music player, Ballmer said the better strategy for Microsoft is to try to capture more share of the overall market with its mobile operating system, in partnership with major handset makers.

Although Microsoft is known for tackling its competition head-on, like the Xbox console versus the Sony Playstation and the Zune versus the iPod, it looks like they're taking a more cautious approach in the mobile arena. The focus on software means they're relying on what is arguably their greatest strength: the operating system. As the article points out, Ballmer's statement is hardly a nail to the Zune-phone coffin. He's just saying that they don't find any business sense in entering the cellphone hardware market just yet, but there's no telling what the future will tell.
