Microsoft Not Planning To Join Mobile Phone Race

windowsmobile.png

Now that the Android wave has subsided a bit, it's time to take a look at what the other players have to say. Among the popular brands in the mobile arena, Google and Microsoft are following a similar approach. Right now, their involvement is OS-only. Is the software giant planning to go deeper than that? Is it thinking about joining the hardware game and come up with a mobile of its own?

Despite having its own gadget design teams -- which make the Zune and Xbox -- Microsoft has "no plans to build our own phone," says Scott Rockfeld, group product manager for Windows Mobile. "Right now we're happy to share the limelight," he adds.

And there you have it. I find it a little unusual, since I usually expect Microsoft to really dive into whatever it gets itself involved in. Either it's playing it safe or focusing on its strength. It's still known for its Windows operating system, after all. Sticking to a mobile OS is the logical course of action.
