Microsoft: Software Distribution A La App Store

And the App Store mania continues. Recent news revealed that joining the fray is none other than Microsoft, but what it has in the works isn't a direct copy of what Apple has in place. Here's the lowdown:

Steve Ballmer, at the recently held developers conference at Sydney, Australia, said that Microsoft is working on a App-store like software distribution. Apple's iPhone and App-store have really stirred the Windows Mobile Market.

...But at the same time Ballmer also mentioned there are no plans to mimic iPhone's App-store.

I'm not sure how the result is going to look like, but it ought to be interesting, to say the least. Will it be as popular as the App Store? That remains to be seen. After all, the iPhone still has the distinct advantage of being a dedicated piece of hardware, meaning that if it works on one unit, it will work on the rest. As powerful as Windows Mobile is, it's still just an operating system. There are going to be compatibility issues in the long run.
