Mixed Year For Mobile Gaming

The numbers for mobile gaming are in and the industry has mixed results, gaining points in a few areas while losing out on others. While more people are playing, the number of mobile users who downloaded new games has not changed.

Nearly three fourths of the 98.4 million people in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States that played a mobile game in December played a game that was found natively on the device, demonstrating an untapped potential for downloaded content. M:Metrics reports that 38.5 million, or 8.8 percent of, mobile subscribers played a game they had downloaded and stored on their phone; that number has been relatively flat from the year before, when 35.3 million, or 8.7 percent, played a downloaded game.

Only 14.4 million, or 3.3 percent of, mobile subscribers in the United States and Western Europe downloaded a game in the month, versus 14.6 million (3.6 percent) in December 2006.

Consider your mobile gaming habits and then look at the numbers. How often do you play the built-in games on your phones? Do you consider downloading more? That kind of trend suggests that either new games lack exposure and publicity or the mobile public is generally not interested in getting them. We'll see how the numbers turn out this year.
