No Native Backward Compatibility For The Palm Pre

Palmpre.png

In case you're wondering about backward compatibility with the new Palm Pre, don't. You're going to have to upgrade to the latest unit because older apps won't work with it. That's probably a good thing, folks. Seriously, if you're still using a Palm unit, it's time to show the hardware maker some love when it releases its latest offer.

"We're not emulating [applications from] the old Palm OS, but will allow third-party emulation," said Pam Deziel, vice president of product management, in an interview Friday at the International CES trade show. "We're figuring on having developers do great applications."

So Palm isn't closing the door on older apps, it just it doesn't want to do the legwork regarding compatibility. This move reflects the new direction that the company is taking with the Pre and WebOS. Its strong CES presence makes it clear that Palm is after a resurrection of sorts. We'll see if the effort will be successful. I read that even developers are looking forward to working on the new platform so things look promising.

I think this is a very poor decision. Built in support for legacy Palm apps would make people who currently own the Palm Treo seriously consider upgrading to a Pre over an iPhone.
