Nokia Is Teasing Us

070829.jpg

The objective of any advertisement is to sell something. Whether it's a product, an ideology, a cause, a business or an organization, the goal is the same: the advertisers are selling and they want you to buy. Of course, that's the end of the process.

The hard part lies in the beginning, the initial sales talk, the catch, the lure, the thing that grabs your attention and compels you to pay attention, long enough for them to get to what they're selling. Most ads are direct: insurance companies will tell you that an accident is just around the corner while auto makers will show you how awesome their new cars are. As people grow more sophisticated, sometimes it takes more than a direct ad to get things going.

That's where Nokia comes in. Using a tactic often used by movies, the Finnish company has decided to go with a cryptic campaign:

You’ve really got to hand it to Nokia for this one. The company has apparently launched an intriguing, and rather confusing, viral marketing campaign to promote the upcoming launch of its Nokia N81 music phone. If the campaign is on point, the 8GB version of this handset will be dropping on August 29th. The campaign features appropriately placed Google ads that contain an obscured image of the handset, complete with countdown timer. The timer will reach zero in 26 days. Be warned that this could turn out to be a bit of a lark by someone with a highly refined sense of humor, but based on some sleuthing handled by JKOnTheRun, we’re inclined to believe the hype. Good looking, Nokia…you get some props for this creative campaign!

We'll keep you updated on what happens on the said date.
