Nokia Siemens Merges Prepaid & Postpaid

Cellphone models come and go, but if there's anything that's been constant in the world of mobiles, it's the payment scheme. Consumers are given two choices: prepaid or postpaid. The former presents the advantage of getting what you pay for minus the bills while the latter ensures that you can make calls anytime you want without making you go out and reload.

Nokia Siemens Networks is looking to change the way the prepaid charging and postpaid billing is done by offering a scheme that combines both methods. It's called the Unified Charging and Billing solution.

The core of the solution is the charging and billing software, ‘charge@once unified’, which is based on the market-leading Nokia Siemens Networks charging and rating engine and converged data model. It is complemented by ‘charge@once business', which provides pre-integrated, converged customer care, financials and reporting functionality.

It's too early to report on the vendors and carriers who are signing up for the unified payment method, but we'll keep an eye out for news. Until then, we'll have to wait to see how this will affect rates and data plans, if it will at all.
