PayPal Joins The Mobile Bandwagon

PayPal.png

Continuing to innovate its services and drain our wallets at the same time, PayPal is now offering Mobile Checkout, a service that will allow users in the US, UK and Canada to purchase items using Internet-capable mobile devices. Consumers can just browse the site using their mobile, then click on the PayPal button to make a purchase.

"Millions of consumers have chosen PayPal because it offers a safer, easier way to pay online," said Kevin Dulsky, senior director of PayPal Mobile. "As the mobile commerce market grows as an extension of ecommerce, it will be critical for online merchants to adopt a secure mobile payment platform to reach new consumers and to remain competitive in the market."

In April 2006, PayPal introduced its first mobile payment service, allowing consumers to buy, donate or send money using a SMS based service. The addition of Mobile Checkout to the current PayPal Mobile offerings gives users the option to purchase items via the mobile web.

You can expect other companies to be watching this service closely. Competitors such as Wirecard and Moneybookers are probably going to keep tabs on this one if they haven't done so already. Of course, the winner here really is the end user, so if you're a fan of PayPal and you don't have a high-end phone capable of web browsing yet, now's probably good time to consider getting one.
