Penalties For 3G iPhones To Be Imposed

The new 3G iPhone is not going to be profitable for AT&T. Not initially, at least, according to the provider, which explains why it's taking measures against iPhone unlocking.

There would be penalties for users who do not activate the iPhone in the first 30 days, AT&T said, in a move aimed at reducing the number of customers who buy an iPhone and tweak it so that they can use it on another network.

The article doesn't state exactly what those penalties will be, but it looks like both A&T and Apple are going to be putting more effort into fighting unlocking this time around. AT&T expects to start earning from the new iPhone plan in 2010. Talk about long-term investments.
