Piracy Hits The iPhone App Store

Thumbnail image for iphone.jpg

Software piracy is a big issue for the PC, with serial numbers, activation codes and cracks for every major piece of software readily available for download on the Internet. The popularity of the iPhone has made it a target as well. Pirated versions of popular apps already exist, with the number estimated to be at 20 percent.

Apple's App Store offers about 25,000 paid apps, and iPhone analytics company Medialets estimates at least 5,000 have been pirated. The company also said it has tracked dozens of apps with as high as a 100-to-1 pirated-to-paid ratio.

While the figure is high, not all app developers are concerned, saying that the overall impact of piracy to their sales is very low. In the case of the iPhone game Enigmo, only 5 percent of the downloads during its first week were pirated. After that, it dropped to 0 percent. Apple has not revealed the actual number of pirated apps and it looks like it's unlikely to do so.
