Preview: Nokia N97

The Nokia N9X series represents the top end of the company's cellphone line, marketed as smartphones that are robust, full-featured and trendy. They're a cross between the E series, which is aimed for business, and Nokia's luxury phones, resulting in stylish yet professional units that represent everything that you can think of and want in a mobile. The latest unit to come out of that prestigious line is the N97. What can we expect from it?

A slide-out QWERTY keyboard - your days thumb-typing are going to become even more commonplace with the slide-out keyboard from the N97. Nokia's added twist is that you get a tilted screen as soon as you reveal the keys. The sliding action is smooth and sturdy, something that users look for in a phone with a lot of moving parts.

A touchscreen - that tilted display is actually a touchscreen, which is certainly going to reduce typing, making interacting with the device a lot easier. As you can see from the videos, the response time is solid. That's always a good thing.

Flash support - that's right, no more of that nonsense about not having Flash. Clearly a feature that's going for the iPhone's throat, the N97 supports streaming video through Flash. Now you can watch YouTube and other similar sites all day wherever you go.

Other features include a music and video player and a Carl Zeiss 5-megapixel camera. The built-in memory is capable of storing up to 32 gigabytes of data, which can be expanded up to 16gb. For connectivity, the N97 supports HSDPA, Wi-Fi and BlueTooth. Expect it to arrive in Europe during the first half of next year at 550 euros. That's $695 USD for those of you who are counting.
