Public Mobile Enters Carrier Fray

publicmobile.PNG

When news of the wireless spectrum auction broke, everybody knew that it was only a matter of time before new players in the carrier arena would arrive. In fact, we've already heard of some who are interested. Recent news have revealed another new entry in the game and it's calling itself Public Mobile.

The new carrier bought the cheapest wireless spectrum, known as G-band, last summer. The said band is already meeting resistance, with some saying that it would not be possible make calls on that range. To prove that wrong, Alek Krstajic, CEO of Public Mobile, made calls in Toronto using a phone from China's ZTE Corp. The phone in question was slightly modified, both in terms of hardware and software, to make it work with the frequency.

The firm is still in the process of setting up shop. It's still working with investors, it's still working with suppliers, it's still working with bidders. What can we expect when it's finished doing that? There's going to be unlimited voice and text wireless service for $40 a month in Ontario and Quebec. So far, no contracts are planned. We'll see how that goes in the long run.
