RIM Reveals BlackBerry Application Center

applicationcenter2.jpg

You've heard what they say about imitation and flattery, right? Well, Apple's about to get flattered because RIM is coming up with its own one-stop download spot. Named the BlackBerry Application Center, it will provide users with all their software needs, or so RIM hopes. Here's the scoop:

Aimed to launch on the the BlackBerry Storm's version 4.7 operating system, the BlackBerry Application Center will allow the user to find, browse and install/upgrade 3rd party BlackBerry apps hosted by carriers.

RIM isn't mimicking everything though. It's download center will only serve as a distribution tool for applications while the actual software, as the quote states, is hosted by the carriers. That's different from Apple's all-in approach with the App Store. The application center will also be available only on the Storm, but we're likely to see support for other models as well, especially if this venture proves to be successful.
