Samsung Reveals Eco-Friendly Mobile

NYT-E200eco.jpg

While they're certainly not emitting any harmful gases, today's cellphones could use a little exposure to the green lifestyle. Samsung's E200 Eco is made out of bioplastic, making it very environmentally-friendly.

...the bioplastic being used is a corn derivative. In addition to eschewing a petroleum-derived plastic, Samsung also claims to be producing the phones "using techniques that eliminate harmful materials like lead, cadmium and mercury," and "the F268 and the new E200 Eco devices and their chargers are also free of a common flame retardant that can harm the environment."

The material is made out of corn? Not bad. The technology is certainly an interesting one, especially when you imagine other possible applications. Plastic is a cheap and convenient material that also happens to be difficult to manage after its purpose has been served. If it proves to be cost-effective, bioplastic will have a very bright future indeed.
