Shatner & Rogers Go Wireless

Remember that mystery announcement that required Captain Kirk's intervention? Rumor has it that it had something to do with wireless. Now that the announcement's out, "wireless" seems like an understatement.

Today Rogers Wireless unveiled wireless video calling, turning your mobile handset into a webcam for face-to-face calling in real time with your friends, family and business associates. Rogers is the first and only wireless carrier in North America to offer video calling, part of the Rogers VISION suite of services that allows customers on the go to enjoy the kind of hi-speed Internet and multimedia experience previously only possible on a PC. To celebrate the launch of Rogers' wireless video calling, beloved Canadian actor, William Shatner, made the trek home to make the first official video call.

Aside from video calls, Rogers Wireless will also offer subscribers access to the top 50 videos on YouTube. The MusicStore will allow users to download and purchase songs online through their wireless phones. Ring tunes will also be available.

And what was Captain Kirk's reaction?

Shatner, who co-hosted this morning's event at Rogers' Toronto corporate campus, is thrilled to be home in Canada to witness such a significant milestone in wireless communications. "Canada is clearly known for its many talents," says Shatner, "but I am especially proud to see my home country again at the leading edge of technology."

Rogers is said to be working on creating personal teleporters next. Hey, it could happen.
