Zune Software Coming To Mobile Phones

ZuneLogo.gif

Arguably known as the other music player, the Zune is Microsoft's response to Apple's dominance in the portable media player arena with the iPod. But what about the iPhone? Does Microsoft have an answer to that? No, it doesn't. Not yet, at least. It looks like Steve Ballmer has something to say about that.

Sure, Ballmer's hinted at Zune on WinMo in the past, but those were just hints -- not like today's pronouncement that "the Zune software will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc."

So it's not going all-out with the hardware just yet. Once again, Microsoft is sticking to its core strength: software. When you stop and think about it, is Zune software even that popular? How many people are familiar with it? I mean, you don't have to be an iPod user to know iTunes, right? I think it would be a good idea for Microsoft to create a marketable name for the Zune software before it slaps it on Windows Mobile-powered cellphones everywhere.
